What is a B&B?

A Bed and Breakfast usually has 2-10 rooms and is usually run by the owner(s). Often innkeepers have escaped from the corporate world to seek the peace and quiet of a rural setting while still enjoying some income. What you get at a B&B is a level of personal service and comfort that is generally not available at hotels (unless you go to the kind that charge thousands of dollars per night). Our gracious hospitality, attentive staff, and pampering will make you want to come back again and again. How long has the B&B been operating?

The B&B was started by Mr. Harley in 1991. He built the main B&B. Prior to that it was a dairy farm. Wayne and Kam Gillespie purchased the B&B in 1993. They added the suites and did a considerable amount of landscaping (there are now nine suites, one room, and a 3 bedroom lakefront cottage). Haley Farm is still a working farm, but we have horses now, instead of cows. Wayne planted over a hundred fruit trees and we still grow corn. Our innkeepers love to plant a vegetable garden and we do this organically with no pesticides. In the summer months we love to share the bounty of the farm with our guests. They especially love to pick fresh corn and roast it on the open fire under the stars.

Is Haley Farm approved by AAA?

Yes Haley Farm is approved and rated by AAA and Mobil. We are also listed in many guidebooks including Frommers, Bernice Chesler, American Historic Inns and others. We have a three (3) diamond rating with AAA and 3 stars with Mobil. These agencies don't usually give a Bed and Breakfast a four star rating unless it offers such things as a full-scale restaurant, swimming pool, bell-hop etc. But they all said that our housekeeping was exemplary, and our guests tell us that our food and rooms are great, so we are happy.

What's included in the price of a B&B room or suite?

At Haley Farm we take pride in giving great comfort at a great value. So many places today give you a low upfront price, but when you go to pay the bill you find its a lot more than you had anticipated. We don't like being treated like that and we don't do it to our guests. There are no hidden costs with us - the only extra is the accommodation tax over which we have no control. In addition to our wonderful breakfasts (most guests don't eat lunch because the breakfasts are so substantial), we always have soft drinks and bottled water, fruit, home-made cookies, candy and snacks available for our guests at no charge. Our innkeepers will usually have a cake or brownies to munch on throughout the day. And in the winter there is even home-made soup or chili. - so nice to take the chill off after a hard day of skiing. In the summer and fall we often have cookouts and corn roasts for which there is no charge either. Guests really love sitting outside with a blazing bonfire and roasting corn and marshmallows and taking in the gorgeous night skies (being on a farm in the country allows you to see the stars without the distraction of city lights and it's a sight worth seeing!) We have a large collection of videos and DVDs (all the suites have their own VCR/DVD, and CD players) for you to choose from and of course there is no charge for these either. We also have a collection of games (Trivial Pursuit, Monopoly, Scrabble, Survivor, cards, Battle of the sexes and more) and books and magazines. So if you just stay on the farm during your whole trip there is plenty to keep you occupied and for which you don't have to pay a thing extra. And whereas most establishments charge you for local calls and even toll free ones, we charge for neither or for accessing the internet. A few things that are extra are massage, reflexology, and horse back riding (while we have about a dozen horses on the farm, the riding is done at the stables which are five minutes from the B&B). The Spa offers an array of services such as stone massage, herbal wraps, reflexology, and facials. There is no charge for the use of the sauna. We want all our guests to leave feeling truly pampered and rejuvenated. And when you leave we always give you a small gift to remember us by. In the summer months when the corn and orchards and other crops are in season, we like to share nature's bounty of fresh vegetables and fruits from our orchards and gardens with our guests so they can enjoy them at home (and of course at no charge). So you see, in addition to breakfast, you get a lot at no extra cost.

Must See:
The Deep Creek Lake area is a four season resort with something different to do every season. But if you only had a day or two I would definitely devote a day to hiking at Swallow Falls. There you will find Muddy Creek Falls - Maryland's highest waterfall. It is beautiful whether it's frozen in the winter or if it's running at full steam in the summer. The park recently built a handicapped accessible ramp so that everyone can enjoy this natural treasure.

Do You Sell Gift Certificates?

Indeed we do. Gift certificates make wonderful presents. They are especially great for birthdays, anniversaries, and Christmas. Today most of us have more things than we know what to do with and they clutter up our homes. Most people are hard to buy for, but a getaway to a wonderful B&B such as Haley Farm is always welcome. And a gift certificate doesn't take up any room at all, plus the recipients end up with wonderful memories. It is also convenient. You can call us up on our toll free line and tell us what you want, give us your credit card information and we can mail the gift certificate on your behalf. No more wandering around malls for that perfect gift. The gift certificates are valid for one year and can be for a dollar amount ($100, $150, $200, $250 or more) or for a number of nights in any of our rooms. You can even add a romantic package, or a massage and any of our spa services. So please don't get stressed out during the holidays trying to think of what to buy -- get a Haley Farm Gift Certificate.

Why is there a cancellation fee?

Unlike airlines and big hotels we don't overbook and so we take reservations until we are full. But we can't do this if people book and then cancel at the last minute (this makes it hard for us to rebook at the last minute especially when we may have been turning away potential guests). The cancellation policy for the B&B and the cottage is slightly different, so if this is a concern please check out what the policy is. We have tried to make it fair for both sides.

Is Smoking allowed in the B&B?

Smoking is not allowed in the Bed and Breakfast or rooms or suite or cottage. Smoking is allowed outside. We do not allow smoking inside as it makes it hard to get the smell out of the bedding and curtains and also the next guest may be allergic to the smell. So please no smoking in the B&B or the cottage.

What is the weather like?

We are about 3000ft above sea level and so it is a lot cooler here than in the Washington or Pittsburgh area. Before the invention of air-conditioning this was the hideout of the rich as it has very low humidity and is cool in the summer. We know however that nowadays guests expect air-conditioning so all our rooms and suites do have air conditioning. However you may want to bring a sweater with you as it can get fairly cool at night even in the summer. As for winter, this is a winter wonderland with an average of 180 inches of snow a year. The ski slopes open in late November and stay open till mid-March. All the suites have private fireplaces to keep you cozy and warm, and there are two large fireplaces in the sitting room and dining room.

Is There Internet Access at the B&B for the guests?

Yes we have a computer set up in one of the common rooms for guests to check their emails or surf the net should they wish to (there is no charge for this). This is a high speed hookup and so if you have a laptop with wi-fi, please feel free to bring it with you so you can access the internet from your room. But wouldn't you rather be doing something less mundane on your time off?

How long does it take to get there?

Haley Farm is about 3 hours from the Baltimore, Washington area and about 2 hours from Pittsburgh. You can take longer if you take the scenic road (Rte 50) but I-68 is a wonderful road and not at all crowded.

What's the difference between a room and a suite?

We have four types of rooms. The luxury suites offer the most since they all have 2 person heart-shaped Jacuzzis, fireplaces, sitting rooms with TV, VCR/DVD/CD player and a fully equipped kitchen. The master suites also have a Jacuzzi, king size bed, fireplace and TV, DVD/VCR/CD player but they don't have a kitchen. The mini-suites have a Jacuzzi, fireplace and TV, DVD/VCR/CD player but they have queen size beds. Lastly we have one deluxe room with a queen bed, but it doesn't have a Jacuzzi or fireplace. Plus we have a gorgeous 3 bedroom lakefront cottage which sleeps 6 persons (it's about 5 minutes from the B&B).

What kind of beds will I find?

Two luxury suites have a king bed, and one has a queen. All the master suites have king beds. All the mini suites have queen beds. The deluxe room has a queen bed also. There is only one bed per room or suite. We do not have any twin beds except in Haley's Lakeside cottage (the cottage has 3 bedrooms with one king, one queen and two twin beds).

Is this a fancy place where I have to dress up?

Many people have the impression that Bed and Breakfasts are stuffy places where they have to get dressed up. While we have a very elegant B&B, we are here to put you at ease. Our main aim is to make sure you have a wonderful time. We don't put on airs or pretend we are better than anyone else. So please don't feel intimidated. You are not expected to dress up unless you want to. A number of our guests are celebrating an anniversary or birthday and do want to get dressed up to go to dinner - but casual is fine also. Your purpose is to have a relaxing getaway and it is our purpose to help you do that.

Do all the rooms have private bathrooms?

Yes all the rooms and suites have private bathrooms that are ensuite. There is no sharing or going down the hall for the bathroom - that might be true for Europe or for older B&Bs but most now have private baths. Our suites all have private Jacuzzis and showers, and the deluxe room has a full tub and shower.

What's for Breakfast?

We provide a large breakfast that our guests often rave about. We try and provide our guests with something different every day. Breakfasts usually start with homemade nut bread, fresh fruit, juice, coffee/teas. Main dishes vary from frittata, waffles, eggs benedict, cheese blintz, quiche, and our signature dish - the blueberry soufflé. The main dish is accompanied by a potato dish, bacon and sausage, and served with Garrett County maple syrup. We are happy to cater to vegetarians and persons with restrictive diets, but please let us know in advance. Our breakfasts are such a substantial fare that guests usually skip lunch.

Can I bring my kids?

While we realize that kids love the farm and farm animals we are really set up as a romantic getaway for couples and for corporate and other retreats. We only have one bed per room and so if you do bring children you will have to get an extra room. So please leave the children behind on this trip and plan on having a wonderful time together and maybe take advantage of our special packages such as the Romantic Package with flowers, champagne, dinner and massage. But if you want this to be a family vacation, then our 3 bedroom lakefront cottage which sleeps 6 may be just what you are looking for.

What are the check-in and check-out times?

We like our guests to check in between 3pm-9pm. We realize that this is not always possible and if the room is ready we do not mind if guests check in a little earlier. If guests want to check in later (after 11pm) it makes it hard on the innkeepers who have to get up early in the morning to make breakfast. If you are going to be much later than you arranged, please do call us and let us know (the toll free number 1-888-231-FARM makes it easy to call from anywhere). Check out time is usually 12 noon. The check out times for the cottage are slightly different so please check under policies for the cottage. We hope we have answered most of your questions. If not, please feel free to call us at the toll free number: 1-888-231-FARM (3276) or 301-387-9050or email us at info@haleyfarm.com. We look forward to having you as guests.
